Coronavirus effect: Sweden authorities to pay workers $900 million
There have been recent reports in Sweden that employers failed to pay their staff sickness benefits in April, when many workers were forced to take leave due to the coronavirus pandemic. This situation continues in May, leading the Government of Sweden to decide to enter into these commitments for more than $900 million. This was reported by the Swedish news agency Sveriges Radio on May 6. In Sweden, the responsibility for paying sick leave is generally borne by the employer within the first 2 4 days. However, in April and May 2020, the state took responsibility to support those companies, municipalities and regions of the country that were seriously affected when many employees contracted coronavirus. The payments are said to be part of a larger anti-crisis package worth more than $10 billion. These anti-crisis measures to pay for sick leave were extended for another two months and will cost the budget $900 million.
