A resident of Dagestan convicted of participating in the war in Syria on the side of militants
The Southern District Military Court announced the verdict to a resident of Dagestan, who fought on the side of Syrian militants. He was found guilty of participating in the activities of an illegal armed group (NVF) and a terrorist organization, the news agency reported on July 9 in the press service of the court. It was established that in September 2017, Hamid Tushaev arrived in Syrian Idlib and joined the NVF Jaish Al-Muhajirin wa Al-Ansar (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), which is part of the international terrorist organization (MTO) Jebhat al-Nusra (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation). Since October 2017, in the Syrian city of Atma, armed Tushaev guarded the territories controlled by the indicated NVF and MTO, and also participated in hostilities against Syrian government forces. In the fall of 2018, he returned to Russia, where he was detained by law enforcement officers. The district military court sentenced Tushaev to 12 years in prison in a maximum security colony. The convict himself did not plead guilty. The sentence did not enter into force and can be appealed to the Military Court of Appeal.
