Reservoirs of China protected 1,310 settlements from flooding

Large and medium-sized reservoirs in China played an important role in containing floods and reducing emergency risks, the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources said on September 24. Large and medium-sized reservoirs throughout the country blocked 168 billion cubic meters of water this year, which significantly eased the flood situation in the country, said Deputy Minister of Water Resources of China Ye Jianchun. The reservoirs protected 1310 cities and towns, as well as saved 2.26 million hectares of cultivated land from floods, and also saved 21.48 million people from the need to evacuate to safe places. Note that in 2020, China experienced the most serious floods since 1998. The national average rainfall has reached 438 mm since June, the highest since 1961.
